New South Wales Bills

A bill is a proposed law. See  ‘Legislative Process Explained‘ for information on how bills are considered and passed by the NSW Parliament.

Sources of NSW Bills

Parliament
    • Coverage: bill information 1997- and full text of bills 1999- 
    • Choose ‘Current session bills’, ‘Assented bills’ or ‘All bills’ from the left hand menu, then browse by title.
    • Use the advanced search to run a full text search.
    • Each bill has a ‘home page’ which gives details of the bill’s passage through Parliament, plus links to the Second Reading speech and explanatory note.
    • Provides the latest version of the bill only.
    • Provides an RSS feed for new bills.
NSW Legislation
  • Coverage: 1999-
  • Click on either ‘Search Bills’ or ‘Browse Bills’.
  • Provides all versions of bills – vital if the bill has been amended.
  • Includes Explanatory Notes (attached to the front of the ‘first print’ of the bill).
  • Also includes consultation / exposure drafts of bills.
  • Provides an RSS feed for new / updated bills (right hand side of screen)
AustLII
    • Coverage: 1979-
    • Browse by title or by year.
    • Use ‘name search’ to search the titles of bills.
    • Use ‘database search’ to search the full text of bills.
    • Generally contains the first print of the bill (i.e. as first introduced into Parliament). Historical items have been scanned from library collections.
    • Click on the ‘download’ link once you have located the bill to access versions formatted for printing etc.
    • Click on the ‘related items’ link to access the explanatory note (where available on AustLII).
Lawlex
  • Coverage: current bills only
  • Type in the name of the bill in the ‘keywords’ field and the year in the ‘year from’  field. Set the jurisdiction to ‘NSW’ and the document type to ‘Bill’.
  • Each bill on Lawlex has a ‘home page’ – click on the title of the bill to link to the latest version of the bill on the NSW Parliament website. Also includes links to the explanatory note and the Second Reading speech.
  • Note: the subscription version of Lawlex provides a deeper archive of full text bills, information about the progress of bills through Parliament, alerts and more.
GovPubs
  • Contains information about print holdings of NSW bills in the National Library and State / Territory Libraries.
