Tasmanian Bills

A bill is a proposed law. See ‘How Laws are Made‘ (Parliamentary Library guide) for information on how bills are considered and passed by Parliament.

Sources of Tasmanian Bills

Parliament
    • Coverage: 20 July 2002-
    • Defaults to ‘Bills Currently before Parliament’.
    • Select ‘Bills’ in the menu bar, then select ‘Annual list of Bills’, then select the year the bill was introduced. Scroll down to locate the bill, then click on the title to access to full text of the bill (or an information page, with a link to the full text of the bill, along with links to the Second Reading speech, Notes on Clauses / Fact Sheet).
    • Alternatively you can search the bills.
    • See also bills currently before Parliament.
AustLII
    • Coverage: 20 July 2002-
    • Browse by title or by year.
    • Use ‘name search’ to search the titles of bills.
    • Use ‘database search’ to search the full text of bills.
    • Click on the ‘download’ tab once you have located the bill to access versions formatted for printing etc.
Lawlex
  • Coverage: current bills only
  • Type in the name of the bill in the ‘keywords’ field and the year in the ‘year from’  field. Set the jurisdiction to ‘TAS’ and the document type to ‘Bill’.
  • Each bill on Lawlex has a ‘home page’ – click on the title of the bill to link to the latest version of the bill on the Tasmanian Legislation website.
  • Note: the subscription version of Lawlex provides a deeper archive of full text bills, information about the progress of bills through Parliament, alerts and more.

  • Contains information about print holdings of Tasmanian bills in the National Library and State / Territory Libraries.

Manual for the Preparation of Bills
  • The Office of Parliamentary Counsel states: “The aim of this manual is to help government agencies with the legislative process by:

    • explaining what they need to do to have a Bill drafted
    • giving them an understanding of what the drafting of a Bill involves and some practical pointers on how to facilitate that task
    • giving them some useful information about Bills and their enactment
    • explaining the role of the Office of Parliamentary Counsel.”
