Current Victorian Acts

Victorian Legislation & Parliamentary Documents
  • Select ‘Victorian Law Today’ to access current consolidated legislation.
  • Select ‘Acts’, then click on the relevant letter of the alphabet, then click on the title of the Act.
  • Use the search box at the bottom of the screen if you need to search the full text of Acts.
  • Selected consolidated Acts are authorised – these are clearly identified on screen (see ‘About this site’ in the top right hand corner of the screen for more information).
Lawlex
  • Type in the name of the Act in the ‘keywords’ field and the year in the ‘year from’ field. Set the jurisdiction to ‘VIC’ and the document type to ‘principal Act’.
  • Each Act on Lawlex has a ‘home page’ – click on the title of the Act to link to the current version of the Act on the Victorian Legislation & Parliamentary Documents website.
  • The Act homepage also includes links to the Second Reading speech and explanatory note.
  • You can also browse legislation by subject  – scroll down past the alphabetic index to find the subject index.
AustLII
  • Browse by title or use the ‘name search’ to find current Acts by title.
  • Use the ‘database search’ to search the full text of Acts.
  • Once you are viewing an individual section of an Act, click on ‘note-up’ to find cases considering that section.
  • Check the update status for legislation page to see how frequently the database is updated.
Legify
  • Type in the name of the Act – matching titles will appear as you type. Click on the relevant item to be taken directly to that Act on the Victorian Legislation & Parliamentary Materials website.

 

Victorian Acts as passed

Victorian Legislation & Parliamentary Documents
  • Coverage: 1851- 
  • Select ‘Victorian Statute Book’ to access Acts as made. Note: the link to Acts from 1851-1995 goes to AustLII.
  • Select the year the Act was made, then scroll to locate the Act – use the options in the left hand menu to display the Acts by title or by number (within each year).
  • Use the ‘Search Acts’ option in the left hand menu to search the full text of Acts (1996 onwards).
  • Acts as made are authorised from 2011 onwards.
AustLII – Numbered Acts
  • Coverage: 2004-
  • Browse by year or by title.
  • Use ‘name search’ to search the titles of Acts.
  • Use ‘database search’ to search the full text of Acts.
AustLII – Historical Acts
  • Coverage: 1851-1995
  • Browse by year or by title.
  • Use ‘name search’ to search Act titles (useful if the list is too long to scroll through or if you have incomplete information).
  • Use ‘database search’ to search the full text of Acts.

 

Point-in-time Victorian Acts (historical versions)

Victorian Legislation & Parliamentary Documents
  • Coverage: 1 July 1997-
  • Select ‘Victorian Law Today’ to access the consolidated Acts. Once you have located the Act, click on the ‘show version history’ link at the bottom of the screen.
  • Selected historical versions of Acts are authorised – these are clearly identified on screen.
Lawlex
  • Coverage 1 July 1997-
  • Type in the name of the Act in the ‘keywords’ field and the year in the ‘year from’ field. Set the jurisdiction to ‘VIC’ and the document type to ‘principal Act’.
  • Each Act on Lawlex has a ‘home page’ – click on the ‘historical versions’ link to go to the Act on the Victorian Legislation & Parliamentary Documents website. Click on the ‘show version history’ link at the bottom of the screen.
AustLII
  • Coverage: 1 July 1997-
  • Click on the relevant letter of the alphabet, the click on the title of the Act to show all available versions of the Act.

 

Repealed Victorian Acts

Victorian Legislation & Parliamentary Documents
  • Coverage: Acts repealed from 1 July 1997 onwards.
  • Select ‘Victorian Law Today’ to access the consolidated Acts. Repealed Acts are listed together with current Acts (if it is repealed, it will have a notice on the front page of the Act).
  • Select ‘Acts’, then click on the relevant letter of the alphabet, then click on the title of the Act.
  • Use the search box at the bottom of the screen if you need to search the full text of Acts.
  • Selected consolidations of repealed Acts are authorised – these are clearly identified on screen.
AustLII
  • Coverage: Acts repealed from 1 July 1997 onwards.
  • Browse by title. You can also use the ‘name search’ to search Act titles (useful if you have incomplete information).
  • Use ‘database search’ to search the full text of Acts.
Lawlex
  • Coverage: Acts repealed from 1 July 1997 onwards.
  • Type in the name of the Act in the ‘keywords’ field and the year in the ‘year from’ field. Set the jurisdiction to ‘VIC’ and the document type to ‘principal Act’. Select ‘include repealed / failed legislation’.
  • Each Act on Lawlex has a ‘home page’ – click on the title to go to the Act on the Victorian Legislation & Parliamentary Documents website.
